John, there’s something I should say that I’ve meant to say always and never have. Since it’s unlikely we’ll ever meet again, I might as well say it now. Sherlock is actually a girl’s name.
I have several issues with this quote and here’s why.
1) John Watson lived with Sherlock Holmes in 221b Baker Street for a considerable amount of time. It was just the two of them against the rest of the world. They developed an incredibly close friendship with each other. Okay, it’s a bit more than just a friendship but, in this meta, I’ll just call it a friendship because we have John “IAmNotGay” Watson and we have Sherlock “WhateverYouAre” Holmes. And now we have Mary “GetWhatIWant” Morstan.
2) Mrs.
HuddersHudson let the ship sail within the first five minutes of being introduced to John. She made no secret of it either. If you’ll be needing two bedrooms… There’s all sorts around here. Mrs. Turner next door’s got married ones… My [emphasis on my] husband was just the same but you’re more the sitting down type.3) Mycroft even let the ship sail. When John revealed he had met Sherlock yesterday, Mycroft said, And since yesterday you’ve moved in with him and now you’re solving crimes together. Shall we expect a happy announcement by the end of the week? In His Last Vow, when Sherlock asked if he could have a moment, Mycroft’s face changed drastically before he walked away.
4) The Woman knew something was up as well with the Baker Street boys. She said to Sherlock, Somebody loves you. [glances at John] If I had to punch that face, I’d avoid your nose and teeth too. Later, when she met up with John, he said to her, I’m not actually gay. Her response: Well I am. He also said, We’re not actually a couple. Her reply: Yes you are. John did not deny it.
5) Janine suspected something too even though she didn’t come right out and say it. I wish you weren’t … whatever it is you are.
6) You look sad when you think he can’t see you. I have given this particular statement that Molly Hooper delivered to Sherlock a lot of thought and have concluded that it was her saying she knew.
7) John only denied being Sherlock’s date in Sherlock’s presence on two occasions if I remember correctly. The first was in A Study In Pink while they were at the restaurant. I’m not his date. The only other time he denied it in Sherlock’s presence was when he met up with Irene Adler, The Woman, but he did not know he was there.
8) Sherlock never replied when anyone referred to him and John as a couple. And, as John said, He will outlive God trying to have the last word. For a man who always has something to say, he sure is a quiet one when it comes to his date.
Sorry.9) Mary Morstan was not in the picture at this point in time when it was just the Baker Street boys, therefore there would be no baby on the way either. Mary only came into the story after Sherlock’s death. Even then, her character was based on a lie. Her name. Her past. Her background. Everything.
10) Sherlock apparently seemed to deduce something about himself in The Sign Of Three during his best man speech while he was in a room full of women. You. It’s always you. John Watson, you keep me right. And, like a good little soldier, John stood and immediately said, What do I need to do? Sherlock’s response: You’ve already done it.
Sherlock was most definitely not going to say Sherlock is actually a girl’s name. He had no reason to say it because Mary was not always in the picture and neither was the baby, which John said they now suspected was a girl. Who was always in the picture? None other than Sherlock Holmes and John Watson … and our dearest hardcore Johnlock shipper known as Mrs. Hudson.
John, there’s something I should say that I’ve meant to say always and never have.
And then there’s this.
Since it’s unlikely we’ll ever meet again I might as well say it now.
Our dearest Sherlock was going to say I love you and, according to the way John looked in that scene, he knew it was going to be said.
John loves Sherlock, too, there’s no question. This is not subtext. You can see it in his eyes, his smile, his personality and behavior. His life drastically changed when he met Sherlock and it changed for the better.
If you’re still doubting that he loves Sherlock, think about how he saved his life despite not knowing him 24 hours prior. Think about how he was never affectionate with his girlfriends, even Mary. Think about how he was jealous of Janine, The Woman and Moriarty. Think about how he drops everything for Sherlock no matter what. Think about how torn up he was when he thought Sherlock was dead. Think about how torn up, pissed off, he was when Sherlock was shot by that wife. Think about how he danced with Sherlock in 221b Baker Street. Close contact dancing. Think about how he groped Sherlock’s knee and said I don’t mind.
And it was so desperately unspoken.
